What is "Sustainable Fashion"?

According to Jill Danyelle, the author of a blog on style and sustainability (fiftyrx3.blogspot.com), green fashion can be categorized by the environmentalists' "reduce, reuse, recycle" catchphrase.

"Reused is anything from the Salvation Army to eBay to flea markets to high-end vintage stores," she says. "Reduced has a dual meaning: It may be reducing consumption but also looking for fabrics or a production process with a reduced impact on the environment. Recycled is when you alter something from the past and reuse it again."

At Evolve, some of the designers that reduce consumption, ie incorporate organic materials into their clothing, are Covet, Panda Snack, Sworn Virgins, and Doie, each using such earth friendly materials as bamboo, silk, and other organics. Recycled fashion includes Pre-Loved, a Canadian company which remakes clothing from vintage finds, Ashley Watson, who transforms leather jackets into purses and wallets, and Burning Torch, which recycles cashmere, silk scarves, and tee shirts into new and fashionable clothing.
